About Dr Richard Pelman

Dr Pelman attended the University of Washington for both his baccalaureate degrees in Zoology and Anthropology. He received his Doctor of Medicine degree in 1979 from the School of Medicine at the University of Washington. Since completing his Urology training, he has successfully maintained a thriving private practice in Bellevue Washington as well as engaging in multiple academic pursuits. In 1997 he received the Pfizer Scholars in Urology Award for his interest in Men’s Health and has many times been voted by his peers one of Seattle’s top physicians. Most recently he was selected as one of Americas best doctors by U.S. News & World Report.

He has published several articles and lectured extensively on various aspects of Urology, particularly OAB and on Men’s Health.  He served as the AUA Representative as a member of the Technical Expert Panel, Evidence Based Practice Centers Program of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality for Guidelines development for Overactive Bladder 2008-2009.

He developed the Men’s Health program for the Washington State Urology Society and is the chair of that committee.  In 2009 he proposed to the American Urological Association Board of Directors the concept of an AUA Committee on Male Health. He served as Chairman of the AUA Ad Hoc Committee on Male Health until 2010, as well as having served as Course Director and Faculty for the inaugural AUA instructional course on Male Health.

In 2002 Dr Pelman’s interest in Men’s Health led him back to the University of Washington ‘s Department of Anthropology where he and a talented group of  Anthropology faculty have developed and completed the pilot study titled Health Initiatives in Men ( HIM), reviewing male health norms and knowledge, health care intentions and behavior, social networks related to health issues, as well as incentives and barriers to health related behaviors and use of the health care system.

Dr Pelman is a Member of the American Urological Association, the Western Section of the American Urological Association, The American Medical Association,
The Washington State Medical Association and the King County Medical Society. He is a past President of The Washington State Urology Society, and is  a Pat President of the Northwest Urological Society. He is a member of the American Association of Clinical Urologists and serves on the Board of Directors of that organization as the President (2013-2014).

The addition of Male Health to the office title does not preclude Dr. Pelman's intent to be able to continue to provide urological care for his female patients both former and new. The emphasis on male health should help to reduce the disparity in health needs that men face and allow for better integration of care. Urology can and should recognize men with urinary disorders that place them at risk for associated or linked medical conditions.

Committed to helping patients understand all elements of their care, whether it be studies, diagnosis, procedures, or surgical intervention.
